OUR WINTER TIPS

KEEP WARM THIS WINTER & TAKE GOOD CARE OF YOUR STOVE

Your solid-fuel stove will come in either a glossy vitreous enamel or matt black finish; here we offer some tips on cleaning and maintaining your stove to keep it running efficiently.
Picture

VITREOUS ENAMEL STOVE

While your enamel stove is hard-wearing, it should be treated with care.
It should always be cleaned only when it is cool.
Wipe down your stove regularly with a damp cloth followed by a polish with a dry duster. For stubborn stains remember to only use a non-abrasive, soapy pad or a manufacturer recommended cleaning product.
Never use abrasive pads or cleaning agents that contain citric acid.

MATT BLACK STOVE

Always use a dry duster to wipe down your matt stove; never use water as it will cause your stove to rust.

If you want to give your matt stove a face lift, you can freshen it up with either an aerosol spray paint or a brush-on paint...both available at Clonmel Plumbing.

CLEANING YOUR STOVE GLASS

Again, only clean the glass when your stove is cool.
The glass in your stove should typically clean itself when there is sufficient heat generated. However, some conditions may cause creosote to build up on the glass. You can use hot soapy water and a cloth or an approved stove glass cleaner such as Stovax, available at Clonmel Plumbing.

To help prevent your glass from blackening:
  • Ensure the fire is blazing strongly before closing the vents.
  • Avoid damp or low-grade fuel.
  • Low burning, even with quality fuel, can sometimes cause the build-up of creosote but it should clear up when the draught is opened.

THE LONGEST LIFE FOR YOUR STOVE

  • Do not burn damp peat or unseasoned timber as this leads to a build up of tar in the chimney and the stove.
  • Do not burn rubbish or household plastic.
  • Clean the flues in your stove once a month ensuring no blockages. Always refer to your manufacturer’s manual as instructions vary from stove to stove.
  • Remove all ash from your stove before loading fresh fuel to allow better and cleaner burning.
  • Never allow a build up of ash in the pan as this will cause the grate to burn out prematurely.
  • Allow adequate air ventilation to ensure plenty of air for combustion.

WINTER TIPS
We’ve said goodbye to our long bright evenings and donned our winter wear again. With our heating fired up and our lights humming away, our energy costs can soar a little and we all welcome some advice in that area.
So, keep an eye out for us in the coming weeks as we share some money and energy saving tips with you.
And here’s our first:

The Simplest of Things
It is commonly thought that an uninsulated tank in the airing cupboard is a great and useful source of heat, especially when we can’t rely on the sun to dry our clothes. However, it squanders quite an amount of energy…the heat dissipates quickly and it’s costing you even more money to heat your tank again from cold. Even if your cylinder is lagged your cupboard will hold ample background heat and your tank will be heated to capacity very quickly – starting at €18.

Or if you prefer, you can choose the Eco-Friendly Sheep Wool Cylinder Jacket – safe, sustainable and renewable –
starting at €64.

If you are considering replacing your tank, our Joule insulated tanks come in a range of sizes or can be made to your specs by Joule. There is exceptionally low heat loss and a much faster heat-up time due to a rapid recovery coil. They are also manufactured from stainless steel eliminating the risk of corrosion. Contact us for information on sizes and prices.
